PROLOGUE — THE BIRTH OF A UNIVERSITY
Ladies and gentlemen.
Distinguished scholars of animal cognition.
Honourable members of the International Academy of Sausage Distribution.
Esteemed colleagues from the Faculty of Canine Gastronomic Affairs.
And Tony, our faithful chronicler-by-proxy of the increasingly extraordinary intellectual adventures at Haverim…
WE HAVE FOUNDED A UNIVERSITY.
Not just any university.
A university where the students have four legs.
Where attendance is measured in wagging tails.
Where academic performance is sometimes evaluated through the successful interception of a flying sausage.
And where the professor must be extremely careful not to confuse the distribution of educational materials with the distribution of lunch.
Welcome to:
PET UNIVERSITY — PU! 🎓🐾
A new educational adventure within Canine Communication Research.
And tonight, our three distinguished musketeers were invited to attend their very first lecture in a subject ordinarily reserved for considerably older human students.
POLITICAL ECONOMY AND LOGISTICS.
Yes.
Political economy.
With dogs.
Three dogs.
And a professor who had clearly decided that a quiet evening was an unacceptable waste of intellectual opportunity.
The syllabus was ambitious.
The methodology was unconventional.
The teaching aids were edible.
And the final examination would involve a highly classified operation near a dachshund's posterior.
But we are getting ahead of ourselves.
Let us begin at the beginning.
CHAPTER I — THE MORNING CONVOCATION
Three Students, Three Very Different Academic Personalities
The day began with a most agreeable reunion.
Lilly, our little wirehaired dachshund, had already risen from her magnificent new bed.
She was waiting impatiently near the door.
Alert.
Enthusiastic.
Prepared.
In the language of university administration, she was the student who had arrived fifteen minutes early, occupied the front row, and demanded to know whether the cafeteria would be open after the lecture.
LILLY — FACULTY OF FESTIVITIES AND APPLIED KNACKI STUDIES.
Academic specialty: Maximum sausage acquisition with minimum delay.
Extracurricular activities: Rave parties, cuddling, exploratory expeditions and negotiations with the kitchen administration.
Elvis d'Artagnan, meanwhile, was still in bed.
Naturally.
Our distinguished elderly Chihuahua has never subscribed to the absurd proposition that academic excellence requires getting up early.
He was comfortably nestled in his new royal cushion, wearing the charming expression of a retired professor who has been informed that the faculty meeting is scheduled for an unreasonable hour.
He accepted the customary morning greetings with considerable dignity.
ELVIS D'ARTAGNAN — PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF ADVANCED RESTING.
Academic specialty: Cushion optimization.
Research interests: Sausage rights, strategic napping and the economics of receiving cuddles without unnecessary physical exertion.
His position on early-morning lectures is understood to be unequivocal.
“CAN WE DO THIS AFTER MY NAP?”
And then there was Pretty.
Our beautiful brown-and-white Springer Spaniel.
Senior member of the household.
Experienced AAC-button participant.
Discoverer — in our earlier family adventure — of the extraordinary relationship between sausages and the Bastogne delicatessen truck.
PRETTY — DEAN OF APPLIED LOGISTICS AND CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SAUSAGE REPUBLIC.
Academic specialty: Situational observation, food trajectories, household coordination and increasingly sophisticated responses to the administrative incompetence of humans.
Pretty surveyed the company.
And, in what appeared to us to be a most sensible contribution to the morning agenda, indicated the next logical step.
THE GARDEN.
Before economics, sanitation.
Before politics, logistics.
Before sausage distribution, the proper management of canine biological necessities.
The entire curriculum was already taking shape.
CHAPTER II — THE FIRST LESSON IN LOGISTICS
The Garden Supply Chain
The three students proceeded outside.
The expedition was short.
But efficient.
Lilly, who had been distinctly reluctant to venture into unpleasant weather during the recent storm, now seemed considerably happier to go into the garden.
Storm Austen had passed.
The atmosphere was calmer.
The garden had once again become a reasonable place for a dachshund to conduct her personal affairs.
Elvis d'Artagnan followed the movement.
Simply.
Without drama.
Without political debate.
Without requesting a written agenda.
One could almost hear him mutter:
“If the department is going outside, I suppose I shall accompany the department.”
Pretty supervised the general proceedings.
And soon all three returned.
The mission had been accomplished.
No emergency sanitation tribunal was required.
No new Great Sausage Depression was declared.
And the kitchen remained suitable for the solemn academic ceremony about to begin.
LESSON ONE: BEFORE MANAGING THE DISTRIBUTION OF RESOURCES, ENSURE THE BASIC INFRASTRUCTURE IS FUNCTIONING.
An excellent introduction to logistics.
And considerably more practical than many management seminars.
CHAPTER III — COFFEE, CAPITAL AND THE CONDITIONS OF PRODUCTION
Why the Professor Must Be Properly Caffeinated
Back in the kitchen, I announced the opening of the academic session.
The students gathered.
The atmosphere became solemn.
Expectations were high.
The sausages had not yet appeared.
This last point was especially important.
Because, before distributing the rewards of civilization, one must understand the conditions that make civilization possible.
I therefore introduced the first topic.
THE COFFEE MACHINE. ☕
Now, our machine performs several operations.
It grinds the beans.
It prepares the coffee.
It delivers the final product.
A beautiful little demonstration of integrated processing and domestic logistics.
I explained to my audience that the professor required a good coffee before administering the ceremonial distribution of sausages.
Why?
Because the equitable allocation of valuable resources demands vigilance.
Attention.
Coordination.
And, in the case of Papa, caffeine.
“MES AMIS, POUR BIEN ATTRIBUER LES GRATIFICATIONS, IL FAUT ÊTRE ALERTE !”
A good coffee was therefore not a luxury.
It was a prerequisite for the efficient functioning of the Sausage Republic.
The students appeared willing to tolerate this preliminary ritual.
No formal objection was recorded.
No one attempted to occupy the coffee machine.
And nobody demanded that the lecture be suspended pending an independent investigation into the professor's caffeine dependency.
CONSENSUS!
Or, at least, a very convenient absence of canine protest.
The distinction is academically important.
But in the CCR Kitchen Auditorium, it was sufficient to proceed.
The course had officially begun.
CHAPTER IV — POLITICAL ECONOMY FOR THE FOUR-LEGGED CITIZEN
The Great Question: Who Gets the Sausages?
We now approached the intellectually demanding part of the curriculum.
POLITICAL ECONOMY.
A subject ordinarily encountered at university.
A subject involving resources, institutions, preferences, incentives, collective decisions and the distribution of goods.
A subject that has occupied philosophers, economists and political theorists for centuries.
And tonight…
A subject to be introduced to three dogs sitting in a kitchen.
One might reasonably ask whether this was ambitious.
I prefer the term PEDAGOGICALLY AUDACIOUS.
Of course, dogs should not be assigned a precise human-equivalent mental age of three or four years. Such comparisons oversimplify the considerable differences between canine and human cognition.
But our students were mature animals with extensive experience of household routines, social interactions and food-related expectations.
This provided an excellent opportunity for an affectionate, highly contextualized teaching experiment.
We would not begin with Adam Smith.
Nor Karl Marx.
Nor Keynes.
Nor the intricacies of monetary policy.
We would begin with something immediately relevant to the entire audience.
THE SAUSAGE PARTY.
And its most fundamental political question:
SHALL WE DECLARE THE SAUSAGE PARTY OPEN?
CHAPTER V — THE FIRST DEMOCRATIC REFERENDUM
Three Dogs, Three Votes, One Glorious Consensus
I surveyed my students.
Pretty.
Lilly.
Elvis d'Artagnan.
Three canine participants.
Three potential beneficiaries.
Three highly motivated stakeholders in the distribution of poultry-based resources.
And I introduced the central concept.
CONSENSUS.
In political economy, collective decisions can involve different interests, preferences and allocation rules.
But occasionally, an extraordinary situation arises.
A situation in which the apparent interests of all participants are beautifully aligned.
Tonight, we had precisely such a situation.
The proposal was simple.
“EST-CE QUE TOUT LE MONDE EST D'ACCORD POUR LA SAUCISSE-PARTY ?!”
The audience was attentive.
The anticipation was palpable.
Nobody left the room.
Nobody requested a constitutional amendment.
Nobody filed a dissenting opinion.
I counted.
ONE!
Pretty.
TWO!
Lilly.
THREE!
Elvis d'Artagnan.
Three dogs.
Three apparent supporters.
UNANIMITY!
Or, more precisely, what the professor cheerfully interpreted as unanimity.
No actual voting procedure had occurred, and canine enthusiasm for food should not be mistaken for comprehension of democratic institutions.
But that is a detail for the methodological appendix.
The practical conclusion was irresistible.
THE SAUSAGE PARTY WAS DECLARED OPEN! 🌭🎉
The students were delighted.
The professor was satisfied.
And the CCR had just witnessed what might be described as the world's first entirely theatrical canine referendum on the allocation of chicken sausages.
ECO-POL 101: FIRST MODULE COMPLETED.
But no great university is truly tested by its lectures.
It is tested by its unexpected practical examinations.
And ours was about to arrive.
CHAPTER VI — THE INCIDENT OF THE FLYING KNACKI
A Repeat of the Previous Sausage Trajectory Disaster
The festivities began.
As usual, the professor distributed the ceremonial morsels.
The dogs watched.
The kitchen became a lively theatre of anticipation, movement and extremely focused attention.
And then…
AN INCIDENT.
To appreciate its significance, we must revisit a previous sausage-party event.
On that occasion, a small piece of sausage had followed an unfortunate trajectory.
Pretty had attempted to catch it.
But the morsel bounced off her nose.
And landed…
DIRECTLY IN LILLY'S STOMACH.
Not literally, of course.
It landed within Lilly's immediate reach, where our famously enthusiastic little dachshund was able to appropriate it with extraordinary speed.
A devastating loss for Pretty.
A windfall profit for Lilly.
A classic example of an unintended transfer of resources.
The kind of event that economists might spend several semesters attempting to model.
But Pretty, apparently, had learned something from the experience.
And tonight…
THE SAME MALEVOLENT ANGEL OF SAUSAGE TRAJECTORIES RETURNED.
Another piece.
Another unexpected bounce.
Another potential redistribution of wealth.
And Lilly was once again positioned to benefit.
Except that this time…
PRETTY WAS READY.
CHAPTER VII — THE TENNIS SHOT OF THE CENTURY
Pretty Discovers the Economic Value of a Drop Shot
What followed was a manoeuvre of astonishing elegance.
Pretty reacted to the approaching morsel.
And instead of allowing the piece to bounce conveniently into Lilly's waiting mouth…
She performed what can only be described as a canine tennis technique. Our tennis court must have inspired her...
AN AMORTIE DE LA TRUFFE!
A delicate drop shot.
A subtle deflection.
A beautiful piece of improvised nose-based ballistics.
The sausage changed direction.
It did not fall in front of Lilly.
Oh no.
It landed…
BEHIND HER.
Very close to the other end of the dachshund.
Yes, dear reader.
The piece of chicken sausage had migrated from the region of expected gastronomic acquisition…
To the vicinity of Lilly's posterior.
An extraordinary reversal.
A logistical complication.
A tactical opportunity.
And potentially a diplomatic incident of the highest order.
Lilly did not immediately notice.
Elvis remained occupied with his own affairs.
The professor observed the situation.
And Pretty…
Pretty looked at me.
With an expression I interpreted as particularly embarrassed.
Almost as though she were saying:
“PAPA… THE SAUSAGE HAS LANDED IN A VERY SENSITIVE LOCATION.”
The situation required delicacy.
Discretion.
Coordination.
And a highly specialized operative.
Fortunately, the CCR possessed exactly such an individual.
CHAPTER VIII — OPERATION KNACKI RESCUE
The British Springer Spaniel Special Air Service
Ladies and gentlemen.
We now enter the classified portion of tonight's university curriculum.
The details of the operation were known only to the professor and the principal operative.
The two smaller students remained blissfully unaware.
I leaned toward Pretty.
Lowered my voice.
And issued the instructions.
“VAS-Y…”
A pause.
“MAIS DOUCEMENT…”
Another pause.
“TOUT DOUCEMENT.”
Pretty looked at me.
The operation commenced.
CODENAME: OPERATION KNACKI RESCUE.
UNIT: SPRINGER SPANIEL AIR SERVICE — SAS.
OBJECTIVE: RECOVER THE DISPLACED SAUSAGE MORSEL.
LOCATION: THE REAR PERIMETER OF DACHSHUND LILLY.
MISSION CONSTRAINTS:
No unnecessary disturbance.
No collision.
No canine diplomatic crisis.
No interruption of the academic proceedings.
And above all…
DO NOT ALERT THE DACHSHUND.
Pretty rose.
Slowly.
Carefully.
With an extraordinarily elastic gait.
She approached the target.
The sausage lay in its unfortunate location.
Lilly remained unaware of the imminent operation.
Elvis continued his own activities.
The professor held his breath.
Pretty extended her head.
Adjusted her position.
And with remarkable precision…
RETRIEVED THE SAUSAGE MORSEL!
No commotion.
No collision.
No visible protest.
No interruption of the lecture.
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
The operation was so elegant that one could almost imagine the British Special Air Service issuing a formal communiqué:
“An elite Springer Spaniel unit has successfully recovered a displaced poultry asset from a sensitive location without compromising operational security.”
The professor was impressed.
Very impressed.
Pretty's manoeuvre had been efficient, discreet and exceptionally well coordinated.
And there was only one possible academic response.
DISTINCTION WITH HONOURS.
CHAPTER IX — THE DEAN RECEIVES HER DIPLOMA
A Bone, a Sandpit and Early Academic Retirement
I decided that Pretty had earned a reward.
Not another small sausage morsel.
Something more substantial.
A grand prize.
A MAGNIFICENT CHEWING BONE-STICK! 🦴
The equivalent, in the imaginary economy of Pet University, of a doctoral distinction, a research grant and a lifetime achievement award combined.
I presented it to her.
And Pretty surprised me once again.
She accepted the reward.
And rather than remaining with the other students for the remainder of the sausage-party lecture…
She departed.
Calmly.
Purposefully.
With her prize.
She proceeded to her sandpit.
And settled down to enjoy her well-earned reward.
An extraordinary academic departure.
The professor had effectively granted her early release from the course.
And Pretty had accepted the offer without requesting clarification.
PRETTY, SPRINGER SPANIEL SAS: GRADUATED WITH DISTINCTION.
Specialization: Advanced Sausage Retrieval Under Sensitive Tactical Conditions.
Final grade: A+.
Academic recommendation: Immediate appointment to the Faculty of Applied Logistics.
One might even say that Pretty had achieved something many university students dream of.
SHE HAD PASSED THE EXAM BEFORE THE LECTURE WAS OVER.
And then left with the scholarship.
CHAPTER X — THE GREAT 50/50 MARKET REVOLUTION
When Three Students Become Two
Pretty had departed.
The professor remained.
Lilly remained.
Elvis d'Artagnan remained.
And suddenly, the economics of the sausage party changed.
Dramatically.
Before Pretty's departure, the distribution of rewards had involved three canine participants.
Assuming an equal division, each student would receive approximately one third of the available allocation.
But now…
There were only two.
Lilly.
And Elvis.
The remaining sausage budget had not necessarily changed.
Yet the number of participants had decreased.
And the professor could hardly resist introducing the final concept of the evening.
MARKET REALLOCATION.
I addressed the remaining students.
“MES AMIS… NOUS NE SOMMES PLUS QUE DEUX !”
Well, two canine students, plus the professor.
“ET SI NOUS PARTAGEONS ÉQUITABLEMENT…”
A dramatic pause.
“C'EST CINQUANTE-CINQUANTE !”
The mathematical implications were spectacular.
From one third each in a hypothetical three-way distribution…
To one half each in a hypothetical two-way distribution.
An increase in the share of the remaining allocation.
Not necessarily an increase in the absolute quantity of sausages consumed, of course.
That depends on the size of the remaining budget.
But why allow such qualifications to spoil a perfectly good economics lecture?
THE SAUSAGE MARKET HAD UNDERGONE A STRUCTURAL REORGANIZATION!
The Knacki exchange was booming.
The number of active beneficiaries had fallen.
The theoretical allocation per remaining participant had risen.
Lilly, the little queen of festivities, had apparently discovered a remarkable principle.
WHEN A COMPETITOR LEAVES THE MARKET, THE REMAINING PARTICIPANTS MAY BENEFIT FROM A LARGER SHARE.
Elvis d'Artagnan, our senior scholar, had no apparent objection.
And the professor concluded that the evening had produced a magnificent demonstration of how an apparently minor change in participation could alter a distribution model.
ECO-POL 101: FINAL MODULE COMPLETED.
The remaining sausages were distributed.
The two students continued their celebration.
And the university's first economics course came to an entirely satisfactory conclusion.
OUF!
CHAPTER XI — WHAT DID THE DOGS ACTUALLY LEARN?
The Serious Question Behind the Sausage Comedy
Now, distinguished readers, it is worth distinguishing our theatrical interpretation from the scientific questions that make such household interactions interesting.
Did Pretty, Lilly and Elvis learn political economy?
Not in any demonstrated human academic sense.
Did they understand democracy, voting, market allocation, supply chains or the distinction between a one-third and a one-half share?
We have no evidence establishing that.
Did Pretty deliberately execute a military-style retrieval mission following a whispered operational briefing?
That is our humorous description of an observed, coordinated-looking behaviour.
But the actual sequence is still fascinating.
We observed three dogs participating in a familiar social and food-related routine.
We observed differences in their morning behaviour.
We observed Pretty appearing to indicate an outdoor transition.
We observed Lilly's renewed willingness to go outside after the storm.
We observed the dogs attending to the professor's speech and the food-distribution ceremony.
We observed a sausage morsel changing trajectory.
We observed Pretty approaching and retrieving it carefully after I spoke to her.
And we observed Pretty accepting a chew reward and moving away to enjoy it separately.
These are meaningful observations.
Not because they prove the dogs understand economics.
But because they show how rich a familiar human–dog interaction can become when attention is paid to context, timing, social dynamics, learned routines and individual behaviour.
The economic concepts belong to the human educational narrative.
The dogs' participation belongs to the observed social event.
PET UNIVERSITY IS WHERE THOSE TWO WORLDS MEET — WITHOUT CONFUSING THEM.
And perhaps this is the real educational opportunity.
Not pretending that dogs are miniature humans.
But exploring how humans can communicate ideas through predictable, meaningful, reward-based interactions while learning to observe their canine companions more carefully.
EPILOGUE — FROM THE BASTOGNE SAUSAGE TRUCK TO THE UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS
There is a beautiful continuity in these recent CCR adventures.
It began with Pretty encountering the Bastogne sausage truck.
That extraordinary vehicle.
The apparent source of an entire universe of sausages.
A moment that inspired our playful exploration of whether a dog might connect a familiar food with its source.
Then came the Great Sausage Depression.
The storm.
The mysterious kitchen poops.
The repeated communication-button activations.
And the entirely imaginary request for a device capable of switching off the wind.
And now…
THE UNIVERSITY.
From the origin of the sausage…
To the logistics of its preparation…
To the collective decision to celebrate…
To the distribution of the resource…
To the unexpected transfer caused by a nose bounce…
To the strategic retrieval of a displaced morsel…
And finally to the mathematics of a changing number of participants.
AN ENTIRE ECONOMIC SYSTEM!
A miniature civilization built around three dogs, a coffee machine and a handful of chicken sausages.
One could almost imagine the curriculum for the coming academic year.
ECO-POL 102: Inflation and the Rising Price of Knackis.
LOGISTICS 201: From Bastogne to Haverim — Understanding the Sausage Supply Chain.
DEMOCRACY 101: One Dog, One Vote, One Sausage.
MATHEMATICS 101: The Difference Between One Third and One Half.
ADVANCED STRATEGY 301: Tactical Nose Deflections and Resource Recovery.
HOME AUTOMATION 401: Why Papa Still Cannot Turn Off the Wind.
And the inevitable doctoral dissertation:
“THE POLITICAL ECONOMY OF THE SAUSAGE PARTY: A MULTISPECIES CASE STUDY OF RESOURCE ALLOCATION, SOCIAL COORDINATION AND CULINARY EXPECTATION IN A BELGIAN HOUSEHOLD.”
A magnificent subject.
Potentially controversial.
Undoubtedly delicious.

PET UNIVERSITY — INAUGURAL MOTTO
“ONE FOR ALL, ALL FOR SAUSAGES!”
Scientia per Sniffum.
Knowledge Through Sniffing.
PET UNIVERSITY (PU)
An educational storytelling initiative within Canine Communication Research.
Haverim Home Laboratory — Belgium.
Where the professors drink coffee, the students study sausages, and the most brilliant academic achievements occasionally occur behind a dachshund.
SCIENTIFIC AND METHODOLOGICAL NOTE
This article is an affectionate, deliberately anthropomorphic account of an actual household interaction involving three dogs and a familiar food-reward routine.
The university framework, democratic referendum, economic reasoning, military operation and academic qualifications are narrative devices, not claims of demonstrated canine understanding of these concepts.
The observed behaviours — attention to routine, responses to environmental context, food tracking, careful retrieval, and movement following human speech — may provide useful material for future structured observations.
No precise human-equivalent mental age is assigned to the dogs. Canine cognitive capacities should be evaluated within their own species-specific and individual contexts.
Food-based activities should remain compatible with appropriate canine nutrition, individual health needs and positive reinforcement principles.
