At CCR, there’s never a dull moment when Pretty and Lilly are around, and today’s saga took an unexpected turn into the world of doggy diplomacy, clean behavior, and some sneaky attempts to dodge the snow. Our little wire-haired renegade, Lilly, attempted to outsmart the system, but Pretty wasn’t having any of it. The result? A hilarious and educational episode of canine communication, social dynamics, and one very reluctant potty break in the snow.

The Setup: A Tale of Two Philosophies
Lilly, as we’ve come to know, has a strong preference for comfort. Snow? No, thank you. If there’s even the faintest chance of avoiding the cold and staying cozy indoors, she’ll take it. Pretty, on the other hand, is all about rules, order, and, let’s face it, a little tattling when necessary.
This morning, after Pretty diligently activated her buttons for “Katcheek” (outside), “Let’s fetch the mail,” and “Let’s hunt the bibiches,” Lilly decided she wasn’t playing along. Despite Pretty’s insistence, Lilly remained resolutely inside, preferring to loiter by the kitchen door in hopes of earning a treat instead.
The Great Doggy Debate
Pretty, ever the enforcer, wasn’t about to let this slide. She pressed the “Pipi Kakou” button with intent, signaling what she believed needed to happen. Meanwhile, Lilly sat quietly, trying her best to look innocent—her version of “If I don’t move, they won’t notice.”
But Pretty had other plans. As I turned back to see what was happening, Pretty took matters into her own paws, sniffing Lilly’s rear with purpose and casting me a look that could only mean:
“This one needs to go. I’m telling you, Dad. She needs to go!”
Lilly’s Reluctant Surrender
Caught in the act of dissimulation, Lilly couldn’t hold her ground. With a resigned shuffle, she obeyed my instruction to go outside. True to her strategic nature, she hugged the wall and found a slightly warmer patch of leaves to, shall we say, take care of business. Pretty stood by, satisfied that justice had been served.
Of course, all heroes deserve recognition. Once the outdoor task was completed, I modeled the situation by pressing “Let’s go to the kitchen” on the button pad. Lilly, in full sprint, led the charge, leaping with joy at the prospect of a treat. Pretty followed, ever the dignified elder, ensuring everything was in order.
What We Learned: Canine Communication and Social Dynamics
This story, while amusing, reveals fascinating insights into dog behavior and communication:
1. Dogs as Social Enforcers:
Pretty’s actions highlight how dogs can act as enforcers of social norms within their “packs.” By pressing the “Pipi Kakou” button and signaling Lilly’s need, Pretty wasn’t just tattling—she was reinforcing expected behavior. This is a clear demonstration of her understanding of the buttons’ purpose and her role within the group.
2. Adaptability and Individual Differences:
Lilly’s initial refusal to go outside shows how dogs adapt to their environments and preferences. While Pretty thrives on structure, Lilly operates on opportunism, seeking warmth and treats over strict compliance.
3. Modeling Behavior:
As the human in this dynamic, modeling the sequence of events through the buttons (e.g., “Let’s go to the kitchen”) reinforced the connection between actions and rewards. Both dogs immediately grasped the association, proving how quickly dogs can learn when communication tools are used consistently.
4. Positive Reinforcement Works Wonders:
By rewarding both dogs—Lilly for eventually complying and Pretty for her “whistleblowing”—we reinforced desirable behavior while maintaining harmony within the group.
The Takeaway: Clean Behavior, Strong Bonds
This snow-day saga shows us that communication, whether through buttons, body language, or barks, is a two-way street between humans and dogs. Pretty’s role as the “godmother” of proper behavior, combined with Lilly’s playful attempts to bend the rules, creates a dynamic that’s as entertaining as it is insightful.
At the end of the day, both dogs proved their intelligence, adaptability, and, most importantly, their strong bond as part of the CCR family. Whether it’s snow or sunshine, one thing’s for sure: there’s always something to learn (and laugh about) when Pretty and Lilly are in charge.
